It’s possible to take theory exams at the CBR with help of an interpreter if you have no or limited proficiency of the Dutch language. Global Talk works with the CBR by providing interpreters in over 200 languages. On this page, you will find information about taking CBR exams with an interpreter and how to directly book an interpreter for your exam.
How does a CBR exam with an interpreter work?
A language barrier can cause problems when trying to get your driver’s license. Fortunately, interpreters offer the solution. With an interpreter, the language barrier is removed, allowing you to take the exam carefree. The theory exam with an interpreter works differently than a regular theory exam. You take the exam with a CBR employee and interpreter in the same room, without other candidates. The content of the exam, however, is the same as the regular theory exam.
So how exactly does a theory exam with an interpreter work? Firstly, the CBR employee reads the questions and answer options aloud. The interpreter then translates these and you enter the answers on the computer screen yourself. You are given more time than usual, so that you can answer the questions in peace and the interpreter has ample time to translate everything correctly. You have a total of 45 minutes to complete the exam. That is 15 minutes more than a regular exam.
Are there words that will not be translated?
Before taking an exam with an interpreter, it is good to know that not all words will be translated. During the English theory exam, terms are used that are anchored in Dutch law. These are not translated during the exam and can be seen and heard in Dutch. There is also a list of specific English terms that the CBR expects candidates to know. The list of terms that will not be translated during the exam can be found here (see chapter 5 for the glossary).
How do I book an interpreter?
Booking an interpreter for your theory exam is quick and easy to do online with Global Talk via our CBR portal. Good to know:t you first book the exam with the CBR, and then book the interpreter. You should book the interpreter at least 12 days before your exam. This way you can be sure that an interpreter is available. You then pay the cost of the interpreter directly to Global Talk, so there is no need to go through the CBR.
